What is CBM in Packaging and Shipping?

CBM stands for “cubic meter,” and it is a unit of measurement commonly used in packaging and shipping. It refers to the total volume of a shipment, including any packaging or padding materials.

To calculate the CBM of a shipment, you will need to measure the length, width, and height of each item in centimeters. Multiply those measurements together to get the total volume of each item, and then add up the volume of all the items in the shipment. Finally, divide the total volume by 1,000,000 to get the CBM.

For example, let’s say you have a shipment of five ottomans, each measuring 50cm x 50cm x 50cm.

The CBM of each ottoman would be :50cm x 50cm x 50cm=125,000.

And the total volume of the shipment would be 625,000 cubic centimeters (125,000 x 5).

So the total CBM is 655,000÷1,000,000=0.625

When it comes to shipping costs, CBM is often used as a factor in determining the price. This is because larger, bulkier shipments take up more space on a plane or boat, which means they cost more to transport. In general, the higher the CBM of a shipment, the higher the shipping cost will be.

It’s important to note that CBM is not the same as weight. While weight is also a factor in shipping costs, it is not always the most important one. For example, a shipment of lightweight, bulky items may have a higher CBM than a shipment of heavy, compact items, even though the latter may weigh more.
